And I laid down on the floor, and I was like, ‘I’m either going to be fired, or this might be a big deal.’” It was a big deal. “So I wrote the scene and I read it, and then I had a panic attack. She went on to make a list of all the famous Disney Princess tropes, and even telephoned her friend and Disney co-worker, Elise Aliberti about how many of the official princesses were kidnapped or enslaved. “And that’s when I started thinking, if she met all the other princesses, I assume the first question would be ‘What kind of princess are you?’” Ribon explains. “And so I thought, we talked about what if Vanellope met all the princesses? In this version and one of the early versions we thought maybe Vanellope was going to go viral, and I thought well yeah, if she met all the princesses that might break the internet. “It would be fun to do a scene of Disney poking fun at itself,” Ribon says.
In a presentation at Disney Animation, she explained the origin of the sequence, which takes place as Vanellope - who has entered the internet with her best friend Ralph, in an attempt to buy a replace arcade cabinet part on eBay - is traveling to to drum up publicity for Ralph’s viral videos.
The sequence was the creation of screenwriter Pamela Ribon, who previously co-wrote Moana. It’s a confrontation that goes in unexpected directions, from the classic princesses’ inability to understand why Vanellope has never been kidnapped and why she doesn’t have “daddy issues,” but at least they can bond with their shared frustration when the male characters get all the credit for saving the day, and their mutual love of comfortable clothes. That’s where we got our first glimpse of a scene where Vanellope von Schweetz, the princess (and president) of the video game Sugar Crush, came face-to-face with all the other Disney Princesses in the green room of. The upcoming Wreck-It Ralph sequel is called Ralph Breaks the Internet, and that’s practically what it did, at least amongst Disney fans, when the trailer first premiered.
